Astana is getting ready to launch a light rail tramline with up to 50 trams before 2017, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing Tramway Strategy Manager of Alstom Loic Dubois. “There is a project called light rail tramline for Astana. It has to be launched before EXPO-2017. We know today that the plan is to construct 3 lines, 42 stops and launch around 50 trams,” he told the journalists is Casablanca. According to him, the expected passengers flow will make 9 thousand passengers per hour. “The plan is that 6-7 million people will come to Astana in 2017 to take part in the EXPO. They will be able to use these trams to move around the city during those three months,” Dubois said. Speaking of the terms of the project’s implementation, Dubois noted that the decision will be made by Kazakhstan government. “We can say for our part that we need 2-3 years to implement this project, i.e. if we want everything to be done by 2017 the decision has to be made in 2013,” he stressed. According to the representative of Alstom, Kazakhstan government has not yet chosen the company that will implement the project. However, he expressed the hope that Alstom will be dealing with the project. Meanwhile, Alstom Transport Director of Design and Styling Xavier Allard has some ideas on the appearance of Astana’s trams. “We plan to make the lead tram look like a snow leopard’s head. Special attention will be given to its eyes. This idea was selected to make the trams attractive to the passengers, so that they like taking a tram impersonating power and speed,” he said. According to the designer, the trams will be made in white, blue or light blue colors. Alstom is a major French engineering company, one of the world’s leaders in production of energy equipment and railroad transport. It operates in 100 countries.
